ABOUT
Our MISSION is to build conscious, self-sustainable communities and community ethics in order to share resources, knowledge, and experiences which promote healthy and peaceful living based on a profound, harmonious spiritual connection with the environment.
Our project focuses specifically upon teaching people how to cultivate, forage and mindfully prepare food for themselves and their families. Our main objectives are based upon a philosophy of peaceful (Ahimsa) co-existence with nature and other species as part of our everyday existence and community ethic. At present, our project is geared primarily toward children and their families.
Lorax Community is positioned to focus upon self-sustainability within individual family units, community outreach/building/restructuring, and creating a support system within these communities between local farmers and other local businesses. One of our main incentives is an eagerness to see individuals working together co-operatively and combining efforts to create a happy, healthy, well-adjusted way of life for everyone.
The agricultural aspect of our project places particular emphasis on heirloom and organic gardening practices from an ahimsa and environmentally sound perspective. We are currently in the process of setting up a small space in Riverdale which will allow us to grow indoors (with some outdoor space as well) so that we may maintain our growing and reproducing cycle year-round with the aid of full-spectrum lighting in addition to the natural sunlight we are able to capture through the windows in our sun room. Many of our seedlings will be planted outdoors during the warm seasons, while the remainder will be planted in other community garden spaces and provided as gifts to our members to nurture, care for and cultivate in their own homes.
The culinary aspect of our Community Houses/Garden Sanctuaries will focus upon food preparation and nutritional education geared toward transitioning people toward a more plant-based diet and planet-friendly lifestyle. We intend to host healthy food preparation demonstrations and classes on a regular basis, in addition to occasional potlucks, brunches, luncheon and dinner social events. Sharing and providing freshly made treats from our kitchens and gardens at community events relating to public awareness of relevant issues is an important aspect of our mission.
We at the Lorax Community Collective are eager to combine forces with other community service-oriented organisations on any edible gardening projects, classes and educational services related to such. We are also interested in closely connecting with local farmers and other eco-friendly businesses within our local community to cross-promote and help one another to best serve those striving to attain similar goals.
The Lorax Community project is closely aligned with Food for Life Global’s principle agenda of uniting the world through pure food, and we are pleased to welcome them as our first official supporter. Our project is expanding very quickly and we are planning to join FFL’s Haiti relief effort when the organisation returns to the area in the not-too-distant future. We are proud to combine forces with Food for Life Global at such an important time in the world, and are looking forward to adding other similarly-oriented organisations to our list of supporters, friends and affiliates.
We currently have two secured centres of operation in the United States: NYC’s Garden Sanctuary and our very first expansion project in Minneapolis. We are also working on setting up another expansion in Tampa, FL at a later date TBA.
Both New York and Minneapolis Lorax Communities are currently in the process of setup and in need of volunteers, donations and support. .
